By Aaron Harden

Christopher Columbus, one of most famous explorers, fell in love with the Dominican Republic at first sight. He described it as paradise, a very apt description of an island of beauty and wonder.

This small island is steeped in history and is very cultural. One of the most popular places for vacations; he Dominical Republic has much to offer the tourists with many luxurious resorts dotted around the island.

There is much to appeal to the visitor, not least its quality golf courses. Guided tours through the dense forests are always exciting, as is finding a real bargain in the numerous shops. A trip to a local distillery or to see cigars made will also make for a fascinating day out.

The Dominican Republic is home to one of the best known and popular resorts across the Globe. Punta Cana is situated on the Eastern side of the Island.

Punta Cana is a beautiful resort, enhanced by its glorious stretches of sand and the fact it is a lot cheaper than you would expect. The luxurious resorts offering all inclusive are too numerous to mention.

Another main destination is Puerto Plata, in the north of the Dominican Republic. This also has numerous resorts offering all inclusive vacations, and if you are a water sports enthusiast, the Playa Dorada beach is for you.

If you enjoy museums full of local history, the south Eastern resort of La Romana is for you. It doesn't have as many resorts offering all excusive as the first two I mentioned, but is still worth a look. A trip over to Catalina Island is also a great day out.

A visit to the island's capital city, Santo Domingo is also well worth a visit. The Cathedral here is rated as the new world's oldest, and there is also a good array of places of where you can stay all inclusive. As this is also America's oldest city, there is a great deal of history. - 31819
